Five Upcoming STEM Events/Activities
BLUEFIN ROBOTICS – UNDER THE SEA ROBOTS!
Swampscott Public Library
Wednesday, October 1st at 6:30pm
On Wednesday, October 1st 6:30pm at the Swampscott Public Library, Mike McDonough and Russ Burgett of Bluefin Robotics will outline how underwater robots designed and built in Massachusetts are used for a wide variety of subsea applications around the world. They will talk about the various types and capabilities of Bluefin’s robots as well as show the kind of data and imagery the robots can collect. In addition, Mike and Russ will highlight the types of jobs in the underwater technology industry. A robot model of the AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) will be on display for show and tell! This program is open to teens and adults.
MIT Mini Maker Faire
Saturday, October 4th from 10:00am to 6pm
Maker Faire is a day-long event, founded by MAKE magazine to celebrate the spirit of creation – whether it’s creators of handicrafts, high-tech robotics, or custom go-karts. At these events, creators bring out their creations to share with each other and with the community.
Here at MIT, a group of students, staff and alumni are putting together the first ever MIT Mini Maker Faire. The Faire will bring together local makers from the MIT and Cambridge/Boston area, and tickets are free and open to the whole public. Remember to mark your calendars and reserve a ticket today!

Bridge Building Program
Swampscott Public Library
Starting Wednesday, October 15th at 6:30 pm (8 weeks)
The Swampscott Library will be offering a bridge building program for
students, grade 3 and up. This group will begin meeting on Wednesday,
October 15th at 6:30 pm. It will run for 8 weeks and will be offered by
Mark Temkin who has led a group for a few years to the state competition
on bridge building.
Mr. Temkin will give them an overview of the history of bridges, the
elements and materials and design specs for bridge building. Each student
will make their own model bridge. This is part of our contribution to the
STEM program which is so important in the schools right now.

Girls STEM Summit – North
A one-day Summit for young women in grades 8-12 who enjoy STEM:
Science, Technology, Engineering & Math
Saturday, November 1, 2014; 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
Fee: $45.00
Included in the day-long Summit will be a keynote speech from a female leader in a STEM field, six different hands-on career path workshops with local women who are professionals in their respective STEM fields, discussions that explore emerging careers in STEM, exploration of high school and college preparatory skills for STEM programs and degrees, a delicious lunch, raffle prizes and a parting gift. Additionally, the event gives the attendees the opportunity to meet other young women from their area who share their academic interests.
There are limited number of full scholarships available for students who wish to attend the program but are unable to pay the $45 registration fee.
